Harrington Park This insulated patio in Harrington Park covers an existing paved area that was getting too much sun to use. The owners wanted shade, rain cover and a space that worked all year. We built a 10m x 4m insulated patio with Versiclad insulated roofing, glass-like polycarbonate skylights, an aluminium frame and SHS150 aluminium posts, all finished in Monument.
The result is a covered outdoor room running the length of the house, with LED downlights, a ceiling fan and good natural light.
The home is in Harrington Park in the Camden area. The rear already had a large paved entertaining area with a built-in outdoor kitchen and BBQ. The problem was exposure. With no cover, the paving heated up and the furniture and BBQ sat out in the weather.
We roofed the area with a 10m x 4m insulated patio. The roof is a 75mm Versiclad insulated panel with taped joints. It fixes to the house wall at one end and to the fascia along the run, draining into a 200mm triangular profile gutter with downpipes to stormwater.
Two glass-like polycarbonate skylights sit in the roof so the space stays bright. Underneath we fitted LED downlights and a ceiling fan.

The owners already had the paving and the outdoor kitchen. What they needed was cover.
They also did not want a dark space. A solid roof at 4m deep can close in the back of the house, so daylight was part of the brief.
We ran the roof the full 10m length of the paved area at 4m deep. That gives full cover over the seating, the outdoor kitchen and the BBQ.
To keep the space bright we set two glass-like polycarbonate skylights into the insulated panel. They sit flush in the roof and let daylight through without the heat of a fully translucent roof.
SHS150 aluminium posts carry the outer edge. At 150mm square they are slim for a 10m run, so the sight lines down the patio stay open.
This is where most of the detail work went. On a normal fascia-attached patio you get a visible step down below the eave where the new roof meets the old gutter.
We removed the existing house gutter and ran the new roof straight in. That gives a flush, continuous line from the house roof into the patio roof with no drop below the eave.
We also use our own aluminium back channel at the wall connection. It holds the panel securely without the row of visible rivets you often see on patio jobs.
Every panel joint in the 10m run is taped. That seals the roof against water tracking between panels and keeps the ceiling reading as one surface.
Here is what went into this insulated patio in Harrington Park and what each part does for you.
Versiclad insulated roofing is a sandwich panel: two steel skins with a solid insulating core between them. The core slows heat transfer, so the area underneath stays cooler on hot days.
It also cuts rain noise. The underside comes pre-finished, so you get a clean ceiling with no lining or painting.
The skylights bring daylight into the middle of the patio and into the rooms behind it. Polycarbonate blocks 99.9% of UV radiation, so furniture, flooring and skin underneath are protected from fading and burning. It is lighter than glass and far tougher, with much greater hail resistance. The glass-like finish keeps the view up clear rather than milky.
Aluminium does not rust like steel or move like timber. The SHS150 posts are square hollow sections, so they look neat from every angle and keep the structure slim over a long span. Powder coating in Monument suits the dark trim and fencing already on site.
The triangular profile gutter has a flat face that lines up with the roof edge, so the outer edge stays crisp. At 200mm it carries a good volume of water off a 40 square metre roof. Downpipes run to stormwater, so nothing spills onto the paving.
Downlights recessed into the insulated ceiling give even light with no hanging fittings. The ceiling fan moves air on still summer evenings, which makes a real difference under a solid roof.
The paved area now works as a room. It has a ceiling, lighting, airflow and daylight.
The heat problem is handled by the insulated panel. The rain problem is handled by the roof, the gutter and the downpipes. Furniture and the BBQ stay out all year without covers.
Because the roof runs the full length of the paving, the outdoor kitchen is usable in any weather. The skylights keep the patio and the rooms behind it bright, which is often the deciding factor for homeowners choosing between an insulated roof and a translucent one.
