Kellyville, NSW We recently built a sunroom in Kellyville that turns an open paved area into a proper enclosed room. The space now has a solid insulated roof, a glass-like skylight and full-height glass doors. It stays shaded and dry, lets in plenty of light, and works right through the year.
The home is in Kellyville, in The Hills Shire. The owners had a paved area at the back of the house that caught the sun and sat unused. They wanted shade, more usable living space, and a spot the kids and pets could enjoy in any weather. An enclosed sunroom was the answer.
This was a sunroom and enclosure project. The paved area was already there. What it lacked was a roof, walls and glazing to make it a room the family could use every day.
We built a flat, skillion-style roof over the area using Versiclad insulated roofing. We then closed in the sides with Versiclad Panelink walls, Alspec windows and Alspec glass sliding doors. A glass-like polycarbonate skylight sits in the roof to keep the space bright.
The finished sunroom is enclosed, insulated and full of light. The family can open the glass doors to the pool and garden on a nice day, or close everything in when the weather turns. The whole build is finished in Monument for a clean, modern look.
The owners came to us with a clear set of goals. They wanted:
The paved area looked fine, but with no cover it was too hot in summer and no use in the rain. The owners wanted a real room they could rely on in any season. They also asked for a few changes along the way, which we were happy to work through with them.
We designed the sunroom to suit the existing paved area and the back of the house. The roof attaches to the home at the fascia, so it ties in neatly and keeps a low, tidy line.
We chose a flat skillion roof. It is simple, modern and sheds water to one side, into a 200mm triangular profile gutter. That keeps the roofline crisp and moves rainwater away cleanly.
To make it a true room, we enclosed the sides. Versiclad Panelink walls, Alspec windows and Alspec glass doors wrap the space, so it is weatherproof but still full of light. The glass doors slide open to connect the room back to the pool and garden when the family wants that.
The skylight was the finishing touch. It sits in the flat ceiling and pours daylight into the middle of the room, so the space never feels dark or closed in.
The right materials are what make a sunroom comfortable and low maintenance. Here is what went into this build and what each part does for you.
The roof uses a 75mm Versiclad insulated panel. The panel has a foam core between two metal skins. That core slows heat coming through the roof, so the room stays cooler on hot days and holds warmth better on cool nights.
The same core cuts down noise, so rain sounds like a soft patter rather than a roar. The underside gives you a smooth, flat ceiling that looks tidy and needs very little care.
We set a glass-like polycarbonate skylight into the roof. It brings natural light into the centre of the room while the insulated panels keep the heat down.
The skylight reads almost like glass, but it is lighter and shatter-resistant, which makes it safer overhead. It is what keeps this sunroom bright without adding a lot of heat.
The walls use Versiclad Panelink. These are insulated wall panels that match the roof, so the room stays comfortable on the sides as well as the top.
The panels give a clean, flat finish inside and out. In Monument, they frame the glass and give the room a sharp, modern feel.
The glazing is all Alspec. We fitted Alspec Carinya windows and Alspec 100mm McArthur Evo doors to close in the space.
The windows let in light and air, and the sliding doors open the room straight out to the pool and garden. Alspec is a trusted Australian brand, so you get quality frames that are built to last.
The structure is an aluminium frame with engineered aluminium beams. Aluminium does not rust, so it suits an outdoor room near a pool.
The engineered beams let us span the space cleanly and carry the roof without heavy posts crowding the room. It is strong, light and low maintenance.
The roof drains to a 200mm triangular profile gutter, which gives the roofline a crisp edge and moves water away well. Inside, LED downlights sit flush in the flat ceiling for clean, even light after dark. A ceiling fan keeps air moving on warm days. Together they make the room easy to use morning, day or night.
A sunroom gives you a lot more than shade.
It adds real living space. The paved area now works as a proper room, not just an open corner of the yard.
It works year-round. The insulated roof and enclosed walls keep the space comfortable, and the glass doors let you open it up or close it in as the weather changes.
It stays bright. The skylight and full-height glass keep the room light and open, so it never feels boxed in.
It suits family life. The enclosed room gives the kids and pets a safe, sheltered spot, and it is flexible enough to use as a lounge, play space or home gym.
It is low maintenance. Aluminium, coated steel and glass shrug off the weather with little more than an occasional clean.
